A FIELD GUIDE TO STRONGWOOD
How to play Ominous Realms
A free, single-player dark fantasy browser RPG about how far you dare to wander. Choose your weapon, leave your village, and decide when to fight, forage or return home.
Begin your journey
Start in Strongwood, accept Dornik Harth’s armor, choose a Sword, Axe, Hammer or Knife, and name your warrior. Each weapon offers different attacks. The game runs on mobile and desktop in a modern browser, with no download or account required.
Explore a world that remembers
Use the compass to move north, south, east or west. Discovered coordinates keep their locations when you return. The Map shows nearby discoveries, including forges and rare puzzle sites. New journeys begin with a cobblestone trail heading north from home. Follow it to the tavern, wizard and herbalist in turn. Each person points you onward. The path has no random encounters. Each offering can be accepted once. After acceptance, the tavern, sanctuary and herbalist’s cottage become quiet, empty places.
Encounters offer actions beneath the compass. Speak with travelers, inspect a find, or enter battle. Each NPC is one person at a permanent coordinate; once all eligible people have been discovered, no more NPCs spawn. The Hunter, Exile, Gravekeeper and Hermit are found only in the Outer Realm. Choosing a direction lets you pass an encounter and continue walking. Beyond Strongwood’s boundary lies the more dangerous Outer Realm. Emergency potions found while walking are limited to Strongwood; prepare before crossing.
Leave a record of your travels
Visit 100 distinct places to earn Wayfarer, 500 for Far Wanderer, and 1,000 for Beyond the Last Road. Your Hero page records these titles and rare landmarks. Revisits do not count again, and titles grant no combat power. Far outside Strongwood, you may discover the Giant’s Remains, Silent Bell Tower or Petrified Battlefield. Each exists only once in your world.
Ten or more cells beyond the border, a few ordinary foes are two to four levels above you when discovered. Check the enemy level and warning before choosing battle. You can walk past safely and return stronger; discovered ordinary enemies keep their original strength. These stronger rolls do not apply to wildlife, dragons, required objectives or travel during an active mission.
Choose your attacks carefully
Each attack displays power and accuracy. Stronger attacks may be less reliable, and either fighter can miss. Once it is your turn, your attack resolves before the enemy response. Watch the health cards and colored result toasts; a finishing blow ends the fight without a counterattack.
Visit the wizard on a village path to enchant your weapon and unlock Realmfire. Each use then consumes a Magic Crystal. A landed heavy strike that staggers the enemy denies its counterattack. After a stagger, the enemy braces for one turn: another heavy hit still deals damage but cannot deny that counterattack. Use the opening to choose your next move. You can attempt to flee. Only ogres, gargoyles and trolls can be bribed with a Gem, and quest targets cannot be bribed. Defeated enemies leave their coordinates permanently cleared. Victories advance your level, and each new level requires more wins.
Heal with potions or rest at home
Potions restore all missing health. Use one from Supplies in your Pack or the HUD’s healing control. Walking in Strongwood while wounded and without a potion can reveal healing supplies. While wounded, mushrooms have a 75% chance to restore full health and a 25% chance to poison you for immediate damage. Eating them at full health always causes harm. A patch is consumed either way. Wild berries in Strongwood safely restore up to 10 HP. A Wayside Shrine in the Outer Realm restores full health for one Metal Ingot, once per shrine.
Defeat or exhaustion at 1 health returns you to your village home. Each combat defeat weakens Strongwood’s border, bringing the Outer Realm one cell closer, up to five cells total. Fleeing and exhaustion do not weaken it; discovered locations stay intact. Resting there gradually restores health, including time spent away from the game. Returning from 1 health to full normally takes about ten minutes; poison can make it take longer. Leaving home stops that recovery.
Poison vines and thieves
Stepping into poison vines costs 1 HP and leaves you poisoned: lose another 1 HP each minute until you reach full health, including time away from the game. The damage cannot reduce you below 1 HP. No new poison vines appear while you are infected, but stepping onto a known vine hurts again. A full heal cures the poison; resting at home can also heal you through it.
A bandit in the Outer Realm may knock you down for 1 HP and steal one Gem or your Lucky Coin. A brief shake marks the theft unless reduced motion is enabled. Follow the red compass glow to the hideout, defeat the thief, then collect your stolen item. A stolen Lucky Coin gives no accuracy bonus until recovered. Only one retrieval or grandfather quest can be active at a time; thieves do not interrupt a pending quest offer.
The theft happens once. After you leave, that location becomes wilderness. The hideout remains your destination if you flee or fall in battle, and stays empty after the thief is defeated.
Watch the Outer Realm
Enemy types have different encounter weights: animals are most common, followed by undead knights, skeletons, trolls, gargoyles, ogres, and finally dragons, which start as the rarest. Undead Knights appear only in the Outer Realm, with rusted plate armor and sword attacks—a middle challenge between wildlife and heavier monsters. New dragon encounters begin at level 3. On eligible new Outer Realm rolls, their chance starts at 0.14% at level 3, rises by 0.5 percentage points per level, and caps at 3% from level 9. Other enemy chances decrease proportionally so total threats remain at 20%. Levels 1–2 have no dragon rolls. Dragons already discovered in older saves keep their location and wounds.
Outer enemies and dragons strike first when you enter battle; their encounter warns you before you commit. Wildlife still lets you open. If you flee a wounded dragon, it may move one safe tile toward Strongwood, keeping its wounds. Check your map: its old location will be cleared. Dragons stop at the village boundary and cannot displace another encounter.
Follow your grandfather’s light
From level 3, new ground at least five squares beyond the Outer Realm border can reveal your grandfather. Such offers have a 1% chance per eligible new square, with an offer guaranteed by the 100th eligible discovery since the last offer. Known ground, forced quiet steps, and travel during an active quest do not advance this count. Accept one quest at a time, or choose Not Now and return to the same location later. A softly pulsing compass guides the shortest cardinal route to the objective; your map lists its coordinates.
Recover a keepsake, open a sealed watchpost, find missing provisions, and defeat an ogre. After those four deeds, face Rauthkell, the dragon that killed your grandfather. Quests and rewards cannot be repeated. Locked chests and their keys belong to the provisions quest; its key is given when you accept. Complete the objective to receive your grandfather’s words and reward without a return trip. Meaningful deeds leave a record in your journal, and people in Strongwood speak of the safer roads, recovered supplies and other changes you have made.
The wounded traveler
A rare, one-time Outer Realm request sends you to a ruined cart for medicine. Declining costs nothing. Accepting marks a fresh destination with pale compass guidance; investigating the cart reveals the ambush.
Pay one Gem, fight the bandits as one enemy group, or escape for 3 HP. The bandits strike first. Victory awards one Potion; payment, escape or defeat awards none. Fleeing during combat also costs 3 HP and the normal 2 Hope. At 1 HP you are carried home. Once resolved, the cart stays empty and harmless. This encounter cannot overlap the siren, retrievals, grandfather quests or the final act.
A stranger’s request
A rare, one-time Outer Realm encounter offers a trail of pale light. It cannot overlap a retrieval, grandfather quest or the final act. You may decline without losing health. If you follow, be ready for a trap.
Inside the venom pit, direction arrows are replaced by escape choices. Entry costs 4 HP. Climb Out guarantees escape for 3 HP; Search for a Foothold has a 50% success chance, with each failure costing 2 HP. After three failed searches, the next succeeds. No damage passes while you read, including existing poison. Escape can leave venom that drains 1 HP per minute until fully healed. At 1 HP you are carried home, so the pit cannot leave you stuck. It never repeats.
The Hanging Cage
A one-time Outer Realm encounter can reveal Mara Thenn imprisoned in a hanging cage. Speak to her to learn what the lock needs. Only then can you find a Rusty Nail; it is no longer ordinary loot. Follow the compass to the find, collect it, then return to her. Free the Prisoner consumes the nail, adds 5 Strongwood’s Hope, and returns you to exploration. The cage stays empty. This rescue occupies the same side-quest slot as a theft and cannot overlap a grandfather quest.
Close the Cinderseam
Rauthkell’s death begins the final act. Follow your grandfather’s golden light to the Cinderseam Grimoire. Taking it draws Ordrath’s hunters: six guarded steps lead to Sereth Venn, the Ashen Sage, deep in the Outer Realm. Defeated guards stay cleared, so retreating or falling does not erase your progress. The rest of the world remains open.
Bring the book to Sereth Venn after clearing the six guards. He fully heals you and permanently grants Strongwood’s Oath: +8 weapon power, with no crystal required for that enchantment. Realmfire still uses its normal Magic Crystal. Follow the light to the Cinderseam Gate and enter when ready. Ordrath’s armor breaks at half health and his attacks change. Defeat him to close the Cinderseam, return home, and choose whether to keep exploring or begin a new journey.
Enhance equipment at a forge
Bring Metal Ingots for armor and Steel Ingots for your weapon. The barkeep at the Crooked Kettle gives you one Metal Ingot and one Steel Ingot. Find wayfarer forges while exploring; your map marks discovered forges with crossed weapons so you can return. The tavern is not a forge. Enter the Forge to see both upgrades and their costs.
The WPN and ARM boxes glow gold when you have enough ingots for the next enhancement. Tapping either box shows that item alone. You must be standing at a forge to upgrade; away from one, you can inspect your equipment and plan your return.
Find rare puzzles and hidden treasure
Puzzles appear only in the Outer Realm. Offering plates, rotating rune stones and lever sequences have 12 variations in total, with no repeats; one is reserved for the watchpost quest. After all 12 are discovered, no new puzzles appear. Choose Solve Puzzle to open its interaction screen. Read the inscription and use its controls. Progress survives leaving and returning; opened chambers remain open, and their loot can be gathered once. Gathering the reward returns you to exploration.
Disturbed earth may conceal treasure. Digging has its own interaction screen. Each foot costs health, and the remaining depth stays unknown. Decide whether to dig again or choose Stop Digging to return to exploration. When you uncover a cache, choose Gather Loot to add its contents to your pack.
Strongwood’s Hope
The Hero page reflects the village’s resolve: Fading, Uneasy, Steady, Hopeful or Resolute. Hope starts at 50 out of 100. Winning a battle adds 2, completing a grandfather quest adds 10, and recovering a stolen belonging or completing a retrieval adds 5. Combat defeat costs 8; fleeing costs 2. Walking past encounters and bribing enemies do not change hope. Quest and retrieval gains come in addition to any battle victory. Hope stays between 0 and 100 and has no effect on combat strength.
Where is your progress saved?
Your journey saves automatically in this browser on this device. Return using the same browser and site address to continue. Existing journeys retain their discovered locations. On the Hero screen, use Download Save to keep a JSON backup or move your journey to another device. Restore Save checks the file and asks you to confirm before replacing your current journey. Saves do not sync between devices; clearing site data, resetting your journey or ending a private browsing session can remove progress.
